Agriculture<\/b> are among the oldest human activities. Even the earliest peasants must have known how much land they were cultivating and what kind of harvest they could expect. But while today the farmer in the tractor cab watches a digital display, in the past the measure was subjective. <\/span>Culture- or region-dependent units were used for measurement, but this was no longer sufficient with the rise of world trade. The chaos of the measurements was only stopped by the emergence of <\/span>of the international metric system (SI)<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the past -<\/b> the harvest was calculated on <\/span>quantity of bags<\/b> from an unspecified part of the field.<\/span>

Currently<\/b> - agronomist working with the unit <\/span>t\/ha (tonnes per hectare)<\/b>. If a wheat field with an area of <\/span>50 hectares<\/b> reaches an average yield <\/span>6 t\/ha<\/b>, the agronomist knows that in the granary he must store <\/span>300 tonnes<\/b> Grains.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The first measurement systems<\/h2>\n

The oldest known measurement systems originated in the <\/span>4th-3rd millennium BC<\/b> in the ancient <\/span>Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley<\/b> and probably also in<\/span> Elame<\/b> (Iran). People used body parts such as their forearm, hand or finger to measure longitude and time by the movement of the sun, moon and stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\n<\/span>... seeds and stones were used as standards for weighing? For example, the word carat, still used today for gemstones, comes from the name for the seeds of the carob tree. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Anatomy as the first meter<\/h2>\n

The oldest units of length measurement used in India include <\/span>Egyptian elbow, dhanus (bow), krosa (cry) <\/b>or<\/span> yojana (stage).<\/b><\/p>\n

Ordinary elbow<\/b> was determined as the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger and was divided into smaller parts - a palm, a finger or half an elbow. For the farmer, it was a practical aid in the home production of sacks or baskets for crops.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Royal Elbow<\/b> was longer and represented the state norm. It was used in the construction of buildings and monuments in Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Roman footprint<\/b> was divided into 12-16 fingers, with<\/span> Roman mile<\/b> had 1000 steps. Thanks to this unit, the farmer knew exactly how far he had to travel to get to the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yard<\/b> was divided into smaller parts and its origin was probably related to the elbow or measure of the king. Sticks, poles and perches came to be used for measuring, allowing farmers to accurately determine the boundaries of their land.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

From grains to tons<\/h2>\n

The oldest unit was <\/span>grain<\/b> (grain). It was a real grain of wheat or barley, which, because of its constant weight, was an ideal measure for precious goods - gold, silver. From this unit, larger measures gradually evolved.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pound<\/b> - a small unit of weight, about 0.3-0.5 kg. The farmer used it to measure the grain, cheese or eggs he sold at the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shekel<\/b> - small weight of silver about 11-14 g, it was also used as payment. The farmer used it to pay rent, taxes or to buy seeds and tools.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talent<\/b> - large unit, about 30-40 kg. The farmer could imagine it as supplies for the whole winter or a big tax for the king.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\n<\/span>...if a farmer sold 200 pounds of wheat, did he get shekels for it? And if he gathered 1 talent of wheat, did he have a huge supply that covered the needs of the family or served as a tax?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In Britain, larger units were used, such as <\/span>a stone, a quarter, a hundred and a ton.<\/b><\/p>\n

Stone<\/b> - about 6.35 kg. The farmer weighed, for example, sheep or small sacks of grain and knew how many \u201estones\u201c to load on the wagon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Quarter<\/b> - 4 stones, about 25 kg. Thanks to this, the farmer knew that he could carry the load with the help of a cart or a few people.<\/span>

\n<\/span>One Hundred<\/b> - 100 pounds, approximately 45 kg. The farmer knew that one such package represented the cargo carried by a wagon or ship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tona<\/b> - about 1 016 kg, i.e. about 40 quarters. It was used for long-term supplies or large supplies for the city or merchants.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Mathematics of fields<\/h2>\n

Before the introduction of the metric system, the area of fields was measured <\/span>according to the work of animals<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>France<\/b> was used <\/span>arpent <\/b>- approximately 0.4-0.5 hectares. The farmer knew that an arpent was an area that could be worked by a couple of oxen in a day. V <\/span>Canada<\/b> (especially in Qu\u00e9bec) the <\/span>arpent <\/b>used until the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

V<\/span> Germany and Austria-Hungary<\/b> (including Slovakia) dominated <\/span>morga<\/b>. One <\/span>morga<\/b> had around 0.25-0.36 hectares. It was <\/span>\u201ein the morning.\u201c <\/b>- the area that a pair of horses or oxen could plough in one morning's work.<\/span><\/p>\n

At <\/span>Slovakia and the Czech Republic<\/b> was also used<\/span> lan <\/b>or<\/span> rope<\/b> - a large unit of about 18-24 hectares, often associated with serf farms. Smaller fields were measured in <\/span>tomorrow<\/b> (similar to morga) or in <\/span>corcoch<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\n<\/b>... word \u201e<\/span>morga<\/b>\u201c comes from the Old Germanic \u201emorgin\u201c = morning? The farmer started ploughing in the morning and by the evening he had \u201eone morning\u201c worked.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

V<\/span> China<\/b> dominated <\/span>m\u01d4<\/b> - approximately 666.7 m\u00b2 (0.0667 ha). The farmer knew that one m\u01d4 is the area that can be worked by one person in a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

V<\/span> India<\/b> was used <\/span>bigha<\/b> - value varied by region (from 0.25 to 0.6 ha). The farmer calculated according to sowing or tax - for example <\/span>\u201ea fifth of a bigha\u201c<\/b> was a small field for vegetables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

V <\/span>Japan <\/b>farmers to this day talk about <\/span>ch\u014d<\/b> - approximately 0.9917 ha (almost 1 ha). The smaller field was measured in <\/span>tan<\/b> ( 0,099 ha) or<\/span> tsubo<\/b> (about 3.3 m\u00b2). These units are mainly used in <\/span>sale of land<\/b> or in<\/span> traditional economy.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

When sowing determined the dimension of the land<\/h2>\n

The harvest was often measured by <\/span>Sowing<\/b>. V <\/span>medieval England<\/b> the farmer counted the field by how much seed he needed - for example, a bushel was the volume of grain to sow an acre.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the old <\/span>Rome<\/b> was used <\/span>modius<\/b> (about 8.7 litres) per grain. The farmer knew that one field required a certain number of <\/span>modiov<\/b> seeds and expected <\/span>5-10 times yield<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

V <\/span>19th century<\/b> has been switched in many countries to<\/span> hectolitres per hectare (hl\/ha)<\/b>. For example, wheat yielded 20-30 hl\/ha. This made it possible to compare farms in different regions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today<\/b> is <\/span>standard t\/ha<\/b> (tonnes per hectare) because weight is more accurate than volume - grain has different moisture content and density.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The road to uniform measurement<\/h2>\n

In the 17th-18th centuries, scientists proposed uniform systems of measurement based on the decimal system.<\/span> Gabriel Mouton<\/b> in 1670 came up with the proposal of the \u201evirga\u201c unit of length and a series of prefixes similar to today's SI. Later in 1790 <\/span>Thomas Jefferson <\/b>proposed to the United States to introduce a decimal system of weights and measures, but this proposal did not take off.<\/span><\/p>\n

When chaos became measurable<\/h3>\n

Metric system<\/b> was born at the end of the 18th century during the French Revolution. Its goal? To get <\/span>uniform method of measurement<\/b>, that would make sense to anyone. Basic units, <\/span>meter<\/b>, <\/span>letter<\/b>, <\/span>kilogram<\/b> were based on nature itself - p<\/span>natural properties of the Earth and water. <\/span>They have made measurement simple and practical in everyday life.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

V <\/span>1960s<\/b>and were followed by <\/span>Australia, New Zealand and Canada<\/b> - Farmers have gone from acres to hectares and from pounds to kilograms.<\/span><\/p>\n

From <\/span>50's<\/b> Printed by <\/span>UNITED NATIONS<\/b> on Africa and Asia. Uniform rates have opened the door to smoother trade <\/span>with grain, fertilizers and agricultural machinery.<\/b><\/p>\n

Nor <\/span>a new era<\/b> of unified measurement has not eliminated all <\/span>misunderstandings.<\/b> Just pronounce <\/span>\u201etone\u201c <\/b>and the numbers are all over the map. 1000 kg in the metric world, 907 kg in the US, 1016 kg in the UK.
